Immortals win the iBUYPOWER 2016 Fall Invitational, defeating OpTic 2-1 (16-13 on Train, 16-19 on Cache, and 16-12 on Dust2) and taking home $10,000 as a result.
The iBUYPOWER 2016 Fall Invitational, much like the Summer iteration of the tournament which Cloud9 won, offered up $16,000 for eight North American teams competing in an online, single elimination best-of-three bracket.
The quarter-finals of the tournament saw teams such as Splyce, compLexity, Echo Fox, and TSM fall by the wayside, with TSM’s match against OpTic being the most closely contested series.
The semifinals meanwhile offered up the biggest shock of the tournament as SK, currently considered the world’s best team, fell to OpTic in an upset series.
felps’ Immortals edged out OpTic in a three map final
With the other side of the bracket seeing Wilton “zews” Prado’sImmortals take down NRG in a 2-1 series, the grand final of the event kicked off on Train and, following a close 8-7 first half lead by the Immortals, the Brazilian team played the better defensive side and took the first map 16-13.
OpTic’s map pick of Cache was up next and the Canadian-American-Spanish team took a late map lead only to see Immortals over take them and take match point; with Will “RUSH” Wierzba and Óscar “mixwell” Cañellas in fine form however, OpTic forced overtime and took Cache 19-16 and brought the series to Dust2.
Dust2 saw yet another 8-7 first half (this time in favour of OpTic) make way to a more dynamic second half as Immortals’ T-side proved too strong and the Brazilian team took the map 16-12 and thus won the iBUYPOWER 2016 Fall Invitational.
